Poetry Month Creativity Exercises

It is National Poetry Month. It is also the month Vividmark turns 6. I know most companies celebrate anchor anniversaries as milestones but this one, in the midst of so much change in my life and the world, feels particularly big.

As a business, Vividmark has expanded with a team in Tennessee who is so thoughtfully ingrained in the art around them and it is the year I moved my family (just a few blocks away), my first and only son was born and we lost my dear Mother-in-Law.

Transitions all around me/us and I can’t help but see the correlation and the meaning of transitions for the world itself. The state of the world itself is in a transition, I as an adult and mother, am constantly worried for my children what it all means.

We stand in transitions as pathways. We might imagine them as forks in the road. But change is not the fork in the road. It is the second after you picked your path. The moment I was holding my son or the last hour standing in my freshly painted office.

You stand upon your decision, either at the start of it or just finishing. Maybe you can see that other choice across the way, or maybe there are so many weeds on your current route that you can’t see anything or maybe you are about to step onto the finish line…but you are in it and everything you used to get there may or may not be helpful.

When I look at the world in these moments of immense change, I can only respond to breathe and to slow it down with poetry.

And poetry is not the rhyme and meter Shakespeare cornered us with. It is the breath of beauty. The pause, the recognition, and appreciation for transition, for moment, for pain, and joy.

As a team we will be using this month to lean into transition, to explore and dive fully into change.

We invite you to play along with us…. email Anastasia or Sam with your picture, name and the weekly task name and we’ll add it to our gallery or tag us in your #poetrymonth creation using #vividpoetics.
